Coilover is indispensable, as safety and comfort are essential indicators for evaluating a car’s quality. So, how can we judge whether it is damaged for such an important component as the coilover, ? Today, I will show you the 6 symptoms of coilover damage to all friends!

1. Oil leak

If the damper is damaged, the hydraulic oil in the damper will leak from the oil seal along the piston rod. It does not mean that the shock absorber cannot be used, the defective piston rod seal leads to oil loss which in turn, reducing the damping force. It is recommended to replace it as soon as possible!

2. Uneven tire wear

If your vehicle has any problems with the suspension, you can immediately see that when you drive through potholes or speed bumps at high speed, the tire surface (especially the front wheels) is ragged and irregular. It indicates that the shock absorber of this tire has been damaged. So, there will be such an abnormal noise.

3. Steering wheel excessive vibration

Damaged shock absorbers can be identified through a vibrating steering wheel, this is because the steering wheel and suspension are both connected to the wheels, and work in tandem with each other. Some common coilover components that can cause problems are broken or fractured springs, damaged dampers, and missing bearings and joints.

4. Compare the temperature of damper

When you stop the vehicle, you can touch the dampers on both sides with your hands. If they are all at the same temperature, it means that they are working normally. It was damaged if the shock absorber temperature is significantly different, or it is cold.

5. Unilateral pressure on the car

When we press on a corner of the vehicle and release it, it will bounce under the force of the spring. If the rebound is fast and stable, your shock absorber is good; if the shock absorber stops several times, I guess the damping is slightly poor and you’d better get another one.

6. The roll increases or even slides when turning

The vehicle sways from side to side even while driving on a flat road. We can clearly see that the vehicle shakes left and right. Occasionally, oversteer, or wheel spin, occurs on the rear axle. This is mainly because the shock absorber is damaged. Then, the damping force reduces and cannot effectively suppress the spring compression, and one of the wheels is free to move all over the place.
