Editor’s Note

In this build, ATEM OFFROAD walks through the installation of a 4.5-inch suspension lift kit for Jeep Cherokee XJ, transforming it into a more capable off-road and daily driving rig. From upgraded suspension components and steering improvements to final alignment and tuning, the video showcases the complete installation process step by step.  Check out here for the full video!

Why This XJ Needed a 4.5-Inch Lift Kit

Once larger tires, extra gear, and rough terrain enter the picture, the factory XJ suspension can quickly start to feel limited. Steering response becomes less precise, suspension travel feels restricted, and overall ride comfort suffers—especially on uneven mountain roads and off-road trails.

For this Jeep Cherokee XJ build, ATEM OFFROAD focused on creating a balanced suspension setup capable of handling both rugged off-road conditions and daily driving duties. The setup combines upgraded control arms, crossover steering, extended brake lines, adjustable track bars, and high-performance shocks to improve suspension articulation, handling, and overall ride stability.

Paired with 32-inch mud-terrain tires, the upgraded suspension completely changes the stance and capability of the XJ while delivering a more confident driving experience on and off the road.

Built for Off-Road Use Without Sacrificing Daily Comfort

Many lifted Jeeps look aggressive but become difficult to drive comfortably on the highway. Excessive body roll, vague steering, and harsh suspension geometry are common problems with poorly planned lift setups.

This build takes a different approach.

Rather than simply adding lift height, the focus is on building a suspension system that performs consistently across real-world driving conditions, including highway driving, mountain roads, camping trips, and weekend trail runs.

The 4.5-inch lift kit provides additional clearance for larger tires while significantly improving suspension travel and ride quality. Lower control arm drop brackets help flatten suspension geometry, reducing harshness during highway driving while maintaining better control over rough terrain.

Front Suspension and Steering Upgrades

The front suspension portion of the build includes several key upgrades designed to improve durability, steering precision, and suspension performance.

Extended brake lines replace the shorter factory lines to accommodate increased suspension articulation during off-road use. A heavy-duty track bar drop bracket helps restore proper suspension geometry after lifting the vehicle while reinforcing a common weak point found on lifted XJs.

Adjustable control arms allow proper correction of caster and pinion angles—critical for maintaining stable steering feel and reducing vibrations after a lift installation.

One of the biggest improvements comes from the MaXpeedingRods crossover steering system. Compared to the stock steering linkage, the upgraded setup delivers tighter steering response, improved stability, and more predictable handling on both pavement and trails.

Once installed, the XJ feels noticeably more controlled through corners and significantly more stable on uneven terrain.

Suspension Tuning and Alignment

Final alignment and suspension tuning play a major role in how a lifted Jeep performs.

After the suspension was fully assembled, the build focused on properly adjusting caster angle, toe-in, and pinion angle to optimize steering stability and drivability. Track bar positioning was also carefully adjusted to ensure the front axle remained centered beneath the chassis.

These adjustments help improve highway tracking, steering return, and overall suspension balance.

On the road, the improvements become immediately noticeable. The upgraded sway bar links and crossover steering help reduce body roll while maintaining responsive steering feedback. Even on winding mountain roads and rough terrain, the XJ remains planted and controlled without excessive sway or steering vibration.

Rear Suspension Setup

The rear suspension upgrades focus on improving ride balance, articulation, and load support.

Upgraded leaf springs increase ride height and help create a more balanced overall stance. Extended U-bolts, upgraded rear shocks, and extended brake lines further improve suspension travel and off-road capability.

To help reduce driveline vibrations caused by the additional lift height, the build also includes a transfer case drop kit. Final pinion angle adjustments help ensure smoother driveline operation under load.

Final Results

After the final alignment and torque checks, the car shows major improvements in off-road capability, steering response, highway stability, and overall driving confidence.

The upgraded suspension setup delivers improved articulation and trail performance while still maintaining the comfort and drivability needed for everyday use.

For XJ owners looking to improve both off-road performance and daily driving comfort, a properly planned 4.5-inch suspension lift kit can completely transform the way the vehicle handles on and off the road.
